Isaac and the Dangers of Passivity

Passive People Are Often Over-Protected People.
"Now Abraham was old, advanced in age; and the Lord had blessed Abraham in every way. Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household, who had charge of all that he owned, "Please place your hand under my thigh, and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live, but you will go to my country and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son Isaac." (Genesis 24:1-4)

Passive People Are Often More Concerned About Their Immediate Pleasure Than About Their Long-Term Purpose.
"When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a peaceful man, living in tents. Now Isaac loved Esau, because he had a taste for game, but Rebekah loved Jacob." (Genesis 25:27-28)

Passive People Often Avoid Conflict.

"So Isaac lived in Gerar. When the men of the place asked about his wife, he said, "She is my sister," for he was afraid to say, "my wife," thinking, "the men of the place might kill me on account of Rebekah, for she is beautiful."  (Genesis 26:6-7)

"When Esau was forty years old he married Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite; and they brought grief to Isaac and Rebekah." (Genesis 26:34-35)

Passive People Are Easily Deceived And Manipulated.

"And Isaac said, "Your brother came deceitfully and has taken away your blessing." (Genesis 27:35)
