Creekside Community Church was founded in September 1990, when a number of families, led by Pastor John Bruce, were sent from First Covenant Church of Oakland to begin a new church in San Leandro. From its beginning, Creekside focused on being a church for the unchurched, “a safe place to hear a dangerous message,” and a church which served the San Leandro community.

We met at Bancroft Middle School until 1994 when we moved to the Odd Fellows Hall in downtown San Leandro. In 2000, we initiated the purchase of the old Piper’s Restaurant site and received San Leandro City Council approval in October of that year. Our vision was to build a community center which would benefit the entire community rather than a traditional church facility. Construction began in September 2001. Over the following 18 months, the Piper’s building was redesigned and renovated with significant retrofitting to meet new Federal seismic requirements. Creekside began using the new facility in March 2003.

It is our intention for this center to serve the larger community with youth activities, programs for seniors, food banks, community recycling programs, adult education classes, exercise classes, computer labs, children’s activities, marriage and parenting classes, leadership training, job training seminars, tutoring, academic counseling, career counseling, art and dance classes, music productions, day camps and martial arts classes, as well as providing an attractive and convenient place for the community to gather.
